General Description

By Nora Bryan

The Anicia Checkerspot is a butterfly of the mountains and can also be found in the Cypress Hills. Look for this colourful beauty on south facing flowery slopes in June and July.

The Anicia Checkerspot really does have a checkered wing pattern of orange and white rectangular spots on a black background. The wingspan is 30 to 50 mm (1 1/4 to 2 in.)

The food preferences of the variably coloured spiny caterpillars include Snowberry, Penstemons and Indian Paintbrush.
