Pink-edged Sulphurs fly across Alberta, outside the Prairie region, but they can be found in the Cypress Hills in the southeastern corner of the Province. Look for them from May to September in boreal areas, especially in clearings or recently burnt areas where blueberries are growing.
This bright sulphur has clear yellow upper wings with a wide black border on the outer edge. There is sometimes a single black spot in the middle of each forewing. The spot in the middle of the hindwing is usually orange. There is a rare white female form. The underwings are paler with a distinct narrow pink edge on all wings. There is a pink trimmed silvery spot in the center of the hind underwing.
The caterpillar is yellow-green with white stripes on the back, and a white stripe with a red line margined in blue on the sides. They feed on blueberry leaves.
There are a number of similar yellow sulphurs that can be found in high mountains, including Canada, Labrador and Pelidne Sulphurs. Pay close attention to markings to identify yellow sulphurs to the species level.
