General Description

By Nora Bryan

The cosmopolitan Painted Lady is a butterfly of the south, but in some years shows up in Alberta in large numbers. Once here, they arenít fussy and can be found almost anywhere, including gardens and waste places, laying eggs on thistle plants and other composites as they go about their business. There are reports that some individuals make their way south again before nasty weather strikes, but most fall victim to Albertaís treacherous winter.

The triangular wings are patterned in orange and black with white patches and spots. The underwing has complex markings and a row of eyespots on the outer margin of the hindwing.

The black-headed caterpillars are yellowish green or purple with black mottling and yellow spines. They typically feed in leaf nests in thistles and other composites.
