Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Program description: Students investigate natural areas, learning about plant and animal interactions and the importance of healthy water systems. They observe how the sun impacts Earth’s components.  With a focus on the local area, students learn about communities and connections to the land. 

Curricular connections: Students investigate properties of materials and relate them to a purpose; Students investigate the behaviours of light and sound; Students investigate the growth and development of plants and animals and consider their relationship to humans.

Landscape Changes and Human History on the Land

Program description: Students develop a sense of place by exploring their place in the community and the histories that connect us.  

Curricular connections: Students investigate Earth, its landforms, its bodies of water, and its relationship to the Sun; Students explore the diverse physical regions of Canada; Students explore the foundational heritage of First Nations, Francophone, and Métis communities; Students explore how facts and opinions inform discussions.

Waste and Recycling

Program description: Students investigate natural vs. human made materials and learn about recycling through a recycle relay. They get their creativity flowing with natural and human made waste materials available to create something new. Students will learn how the natural environment supports communities and how they can be good stewards. The importance of wetlands will be highlighted.

Curricular connections: Students investigate properties of materials and relate them to a purpose.

Rivers and Wetlands

Program description: Students investigate the growth and development of plants and animals and explore environmental changes in rivers and wetlands.

Curricular connections: Students investigate the growth and development of plants and animals and consider their relationship to humans; Students investigate Earth, its landforms, its bodies of water, and its relationship to the Sun.

Beavers

Program description: Students learn how beavers have become such successful animals and how they contribute to healthy ecosystems. They also explore the importance of beavers to different cultures and learn how beavers shaped Canada as we know it today. 

Curricular connections: Students investigate the growth and development of plants and animals and consider their relationship to humans.

Dark Skies

Program description: Students develop a sense of place by exploring their place in the community and the histories that connect us while learning about the importance of dark skies for all living things. 

Curricular connections: Students investigate the behaviour of light; Students investigate the growth and development of plants and animals and consider their relationship to humans; Students investigate Earth, its landforms, its bodies of water, and its relationship to the Sun.
