CONFOUNDING COYOTES:
A photographic and scientific journey exploring how world views, language, perceptions,
media, and colonial ideologies colour our everyday entanglements with and
management of coyotes. The vital link between local research, citizen science,
education, and tactics to improve co-existence (e.g., attractant controls and humane
hazing) are discussed. A large portion of the talk will be reserved to respond to
audience questions related to living with coyotes.
GUEST SPEAKER:
Shelley M. Alexander, Ph.D.
Shelley is a Full Professor in the Department of Geography, University of Calgary. She
has 30 years of experience studying human-wildlife conflict, specializing in wolves and
coyotes in Canada. She has worked with wild and captive wolves and coyotes, raised
coyote pups, worked directly in co-existence mitigation for urban coyotes, is an expert
wildlife tracker, and an established geospatial analyst. Shelley advocates for improved
animal welfare in science and practice related to wildlife and is extremely active in
education outreach in our local communities.
